Why did you decide on the name tokidoki?

When I was in school, I wanted my own website and I was into Japanese art and culture. So I wanted a Japanese word and really liked the “tokidoki,” which means “sometimes” in Japanese.

Can talk about the new Sephora fall collection you’ve done, 24 Karat.

After launching a few very colourful tokidoki collections, I wanted to do something for the holiday, something special. I wanted a richer look, something different from the regular palette; something to do with the holiday, like celebration. When I think “celebration,” I think about gold and silver, from the fireworks to the bottle of champagne – all about sparkles. I’ve used that colour before on a skateboard, black and gold, so I started working around that for a shadow palette.

Can talk about your collection, the Fall 2011 line.

This is for fall; I come out with two collections a year. Everything’s from 18 karat gold: yellow and rose gold mostly, and a little bit of white. I have all the stones cut in India and in Germany. I buy the rocks and they’re sent overseas to Los Angeles to where I live. I started 10 years ago; Barneys was my first account. We started selling at Holts for about two, three years I think. And it’s been really successful.

What kind of stones do you use?

I use unusual stones where you can’t find everywhere, like this green stone is an African stone called chrysophase. And the minty one is mint chrysophase that’s actually mined in Brazil. I use a lot of pink opal and onyx, but try to mix it in a refined way.

If there’s one piece of jewellery women should invest in, which would it be?

I think the 34-inch long chains; they’re great for layering or doubling up. You can wear it with anything you already have. You can wrap it around your wrist; I think it’s very versatile.

Can you talk about your Spring 2011 collection?
Our Spring 2011 collection was inspired by Bellatrix, one of the brightest stars on the Orion Galaxy and home to “the female warrior.”

What can we expect for Fall 2011?
For Fall 2011 we created a collection that strikes the perfect balance between the shameless opulence of the Roaring Twenties and the rustic glamour of the Wild West. The collection predominantly uses oxidized, golden tones along with Swarovski Elements for the perfect day-to-night fix. The pieces are individually statements, but the intricate designs lend themselves well for stacking and layering for a more bohemian impact.

You two are not just dedicated to your brand, but are very much involved with charity work, specifically you have your own charity, Live With A Lifelong Ambition. Can you talk about your foundation?
After visiting Lwala, Kenya in 2006, some friends and I co-founded an organization in the name of the village so that we could support grass root initiatives in underdeveloped areas of Africa. Our organization helped fund the creation of Lwala’s first health facility. I came up with the acronym Live With A Lifelong Ambition, because I felt like it would inspire young people to use their passion and talents to impact positive change.
